Shooting My Shot: Bringing Journeys to ATL by Donte Brown

You miss %100 of the shots you never take…

I’ve found that out to be one of the most important statements of 2018. It took this year for me to learn that fear doesn’t protect you, it holds you back from truly accomplishing your goals.

This leads me to how I landed a Journeys campaign.

Taking the Chance

When I was in college I was obsessed with overwhelming myself with photography projects. School wasn’t my favorite thing but it took mostly ALL of my time. I had to find a way to counteract that; so I decided to take on a film and darkroom photography class as well as my own personal/business projects.

Towards the end of the semester my goal was to do a really big project! I had no idea what it would be but I prayed it would be something that would look really great in my portfolio. I had this thought to reach out to brands and the first one that came to mind was Journeys. I’ve always had a personal connection to this store since I was younger, so I knew it would be perfect.

The first challenge was crafting out a good email. I’m not the best writer of emails but I knew I had a cool idea for social and I had to send it out. After a crazy amount of hours of finding out the perfect contact, I crafted it out and sent it off. I make sure to never high hopes when reaching out like this because you’ll never know if you’ll get a response.

The Moment

Months later…right before my class finals hit I received an email stating how they wanted to bring me on board. It was one of the happiest days of my life! It turned out that the direction I proposed was a direction they were already going in, so all of the puzzle pieces came together perfectly.

Long story short…During finals week I spent 3 of those 5 days shooting the campaign and also Billboard at the same time.

Here are some photos from the campaign:

  1. Canon 5D Mark IV

  2. Canon 24-70mm 2.8

  3. Profoto D1

  4. Mamiya 645 Pro-TL

Final Words:

Please don’t be scared to throw every bit of yourself out there. No’s make you stronger and Yes’s give you more freedom. There’s no downside to either. However, if the no’s out weigh the yes’s than work so hard that the no’s want you and come to you!

Love you guys.

This Is How I’m Moving On Mondays! by Donte Brown

This might sound weird, but I really love Mondays. I always saw them as a new beginning. I know if I have a good Monday, everything within the week will move forward smoothly. That’s why I make it a priority to plan it out perfectly even if it’s a day off, or full of shooting/planning.

Today I've decided to start it all off by wearing the newly dropped Clyde collection Peace on Earth by Puma.

This has easily become one of my new favorites! The ankle support and the intricate feather embroidery won me over quick! The contemporary design of this shoe really adds a refreshing touch to your look; whether you decide to play ball, run, or dress up a little bit.

For example, today I had to move pretty fast. Living an hour away from the city means if I don’t get up or leave on time the WHOLE day will be pushed back. So, in order to make the meeting on time today with my team, I had to hurry and choose a fit that was not only presentable and relaxed but also had to be quick to throw on. Luckily for me it is usually easy because of my minimal closet.

Here’s what I threw together:

Cap: Coca Cola

Denim Jacket: ASOS

Trousers: ASOS

Sneakers: PUMA Hoops

Now I’m about to get a quick bite with the team at Homegrown! Stay tuned because the shoot we are planning is going to be really epic!
